Charlie's Mediterranean Cuisine - Ypsilanti, Michigan

In the former home of La Shish there is now a place called Charlie's Mediterranean Cuisine, don't let the name change fool you, the food is one and the same. A former franchisee has gone independent in the wake of the La Shish empire's demise with a sea of coupons to be had to boot, all the better for my taste buds. You can find coupons in the Clipper magazine as well as other mailings. You can also print some out here: http://www.coupons4annarbor.com/AcctCoupons-117225.11312_Charlies_La_Shish.html

The pita is still the same, fresh and warm from the brick oven. There is no other pita like this in the area and I have looked. It is just perfect for the incredible garlic sauce and hummus. The salad is crisp and tangy with the hint of sumac in the trademark dressing. Everything I loved about the old guard remains. The appetizers are still big enough to make entrees, I especially like the Hummus with Lamb.

The Deboned Chicken is to die for. Easily the moistest and most flavorful chicken around. Plenty to be had, I almost always have leftovers for the next day. The Shish Tawook is nice, especially in the lemon oregano sauce. The Schwarmas and zesty Ghallabas are happy too. Feeling like a splurge? Get the tender grilled Lamb Chops. If you are confused about what to get the Shish Combo is delicious although to be honest I have had Shish Kafta that is better seasoned to my tastebuds. I am simply addicted to the delicious rice with almonds and the pink pickled radishes.

The juices are excellent here, fresh squeezed. They make absolutely fabulous smoothies as well, rich with honey and bananas. The tea is fresh brewed and you can get Arabic coffee if that is your taste.

If you are a fan of middle eastern cuisine, this is top of the line stuff. The atmosphere is elegant, the food fresh and well prepared. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. You pay accordingly though, so I of course use coupons.
